1. Fifteen seconds is there to stop the hand, not to rush the head

Put a clock on mental arithmetic and most children start tapping: one of these bubbles has to be right. This lesson reverses the order. The sign at the bottom of the pond holds the question, 3 × 7 = ?, six to eight bubbles rise through the water with a number inside each, and the ring beside the sign begins a slow fifteen-second turn. A fast finger gains nothing here — a wrong pop only bursts one bubble and the question stays put until it is worked out. Fifteen seconds is just long enough to run one times-table fact through your head, and too short to test every bubble, so the cheapest strategy becomes the correct one: work it out, then pop once.

2. A miss costs no points and no time, which is what makes it useful

Practice apps that punish mistakes teach children to stop trying. Here a wrong pop removes one bubble, leaves the clock alone and leaves the score alone. Points only arrive with a correct pop; the countdown is the only thing that actually runs out. So an error stops being a loss and becomes a free elimination — the bubble that burst marks exactly where the calculation went wrong.

Speed and accuracy are separated on purpose. When the ring is empty the question passes with no score, the correct bubble glows briefly so it can be seen once, and the next one begins. Nothing is deducted, and nothing is scolded.

3. The bubbles point a direction, never the answer

After a miss the lesson says one thing: off by one or two is "a little bigger", three to nine is "somewhat bigger", ten or more is "a lot bigger", with the matching "smaller" wording on the other side. It never names the answer and never finishes the sum for you. To move on you have to go back to the sign and work it out again. A hint that gives direction keeps the thinking with the learner; a hint that gives the number takes the thinking away.

4. Streaks, leftover seconds, and a pond that steps back

A correct pop is worth ten points plus one more point for every second left on the ring, up to five — so fast and right beats merely fast. Consecutive correct pops build a streak, but a streak only resets to zero; nothing more is taken away. What decides the stars is the share of questions answered on the very first pop: eleven out of twelve earns five stars, nine earns four, seven earns three. And if three questions time out in a row, the pond quietly steps the questions down a level, so a child who has lost the rhythm gets something reachable instead of a wall.

Which operation should we choose?Addition and subtraction practise carrying within 20 on Normal and within 100 on Challenge; multiply and divide drill the 1–9 tables and the division facts that turn them around; mixed warms up with addition and subtraction, then lets multiplication and division take over. Start with add and subtract on Normal, and switch once first-pop accuracy is high.

Does a wrong pop cost points?No. No points and no time are lost. The burst bubble disappears, the others stay where they are, and you can keep aiming. Only the countdown ends a question, and a timed-out question simply scores nothing while the correct bubble glows once.

When does the difficulty change?The operation and difficulty picked in the start card apply from the next round; the level never jumps in the middle of one. The single exception is three timeouts in a row, which steps the questions down a level until the rhythm comes back.
