You can also open the lesson on the full page. Below is the thinking behind how this lesson was designed.

1. Two rows, three columns: the cleanest shape for learning to find patterns

Most visual-reasoning puzzles for children arrive all at once: three rows, three columns, rotations and additions mixed together, and most kids give up after two glances. This lesson goes the other way. Every question uses only two rows and three columns — the row decides the shape family, so one row is all triangles and the other all circles; the column decides size and fill, so shapes grow from left to right while solid and hollow take turns. The rules are few and clear, which means a child can genuinely find them with their own eyes the very first time.

Finding a pattern is less about being clever and more about having a fixed way of looking. A two-row matrix is the smallest setting where you can practice the routine — scan the row first, then the column — until it becomes automatic. Once that routine exists, bigger and busier matrices stop being scary, because the child already holds the key.

2. A wrong answer points the way, never the answer

Plenty of practice products mark a wrong answer with a big red cross, and children quickly learn the wrong lesson: stop trying. This lesson does the opposite — a miss costs nothing and never skips the question. The card shakes, and the lesson points you back in a direction: is this row really one shape? Does this column grow to the right? Only after two misses does the third-level hint come out and name the row and the column directly, leaving the final matching to you.

Stuck children can open the hints, which unlock one level at a time: rows first, then columns, then fill. The hints never contain an answer letter. We give the method in full and leave the conclusion where it belongs — with the child.

3. The answer card makes you say it before you pick it

The most distinctive step comes at the end. Spotting the two missing shapes is not enough: you have to pick an answer card carrying two letters — the left letter answers ?₁, the right one answers ?₂. This is deliberate. Before choosing, the child has to say the missing shapes out loud in their head — "the second row is missing a small hollow circle" — and only then find the matching letters among the nine options. The answer is not tapped out; it is said first and chosen second.

The decoys follow the same rhythm. They are built to be nearly right — correct shape but wrong size, correct size but wrong shape — precisely to catch children who look at only half the rule. A round is twelve questions: ten points for a first-try answer, six after a miss, and the score never goes down, so a child can afford to slow down and look properly.

4. Generated on the spot, always one checkable rule

All twelve questions in a round are generated on the spot by the program. Shape-family combinations never repeat within a round, and every question carries exactly one rule: rows manage shape, columns manage size and fill, and any cell can be worked out from them. When a child finishes a question, a rule they can explain aloud is a real rule; if they cannot explain it, the direction hints will walk them through it again.

Before playing, try asking two questions: what shape belongs in the second row, and is the blank's column bigger or smaller than the cell on its left? Think first, then open the details block in the lesson and compare.

FAQ

Does a wrong answer lose points or skip the question? Neither. The score only goes up when you answer correctly; a miss simply means this question earns six instead of ten.

Do the hints give the answer away? No. They describe the method — rows first, then columns, then fill — and leave the matching to you.

Are the questions fixed? No. All twelve are generated on the spot, each with a different pair of shape rows, and the decoys are built to look close: right shape but wrong size, right size but wrong shape. The rule itself is always single and checkable.
